What happens to greenhouse gas emissions when floodwaters cover a floodplain?
As the floodwaters slowly recede, our automated flux chambers continue to operate, and the FluxFlood team remains in the field measuring CO₂ and CH₄ emissions. Using automated chambers and continuous monitoring systems, we are capturing how greenhouse gas fluxes respond to one of the most dynamic phases in the annual flood cycle.
These measurements will help us understand how extreme hydrological events influence the climate impact of river-floodplain ecosystems and improve our ability to account for these events in greenhouse gas budgets.
What do you think: do floods increase or decrease greenhouse gas emissions?
