89th Biebrza Public Lecture Series – Bringing Wetland Science to the Public
On February 21, 2026, the 89th edition of the Biebrza Public Lecture Series took place at the headquarters of Biebrza National Park in Osowiec-Twierdza. This long-standing popular science event is open to everyone interested in nature, water, and the future of wetlands — from local residents and students to researchers, conservation practitioners, and policymakers.
The theme of this meeting was the protection of water resources in Biebrza National Park, highlighting the crucial role of wetlands in storing water, regulating climate, and supporting biodiversity. Organized as part of the 2026 Year of Water Resources Protection, the event focused on both scientific knowledge and practical solutions related to water management in the Biebrza Valley.
The program combined accessible lectures with discussions on wet agriculture (paludiculture), peatland rewetting, and regional water challenges. During the event, results from the FluxFlood project on greenhouse gas emissions from flooded areas of the Biebrza Valley were also presented.
Many thanks to Biebrza National Park for organizing this inspiring event and for creating a space where science and society can meet to exchange knowledge and reflect on the future of wetlands and water protection.
